Prescription safety eyewear

UNICOindividual - International

For a safe perspective

These prescription safety glasses bring together the balance of defective vision with eye protection to guard against mechanical, chemical and/or optical factors. The lenses of prescription safety glasses are made in such a way that they guarantee greater breaking strength (EN 166) than that of conventional lenses. In addition to this, the frame (EN 166) is aligned with the requirements of the respective workplace, for example, with a particularly wide field of vision and/or a splash guard. Apart from the purely safety-based considerations, comfort has also been taken into account. If the frame sits nicely and comfortably, the safety eyewear will be worn all the more willingly by the wearer. The interaction between safety and the corrective effect can work optimally.

The person in charge of safety chooses the appropriate prescription safety glasses together with the employees and/or the PPE specialists, as a supplement to the personal protective equipment (PPE). The focus in this decision process is providing optimum protection along with the personal requirements and fulfilling the conditions of the daily tasks. It is essential that the prescription safety glasses are tested together with the glass and frame. This is the only way of ensuring that the safety eyewear can be used in the required strength class.

International studies* confirm that for every euro invested in personal protective equipment there is a return of factor 2.2. Investments in highquality vision protection equipment are worth multiple returns. Because 80% of our sensory receptions are supported by our vision.

Strength classes

Determining the strength class is one of the most important factors in the decision-making process for safety eyewear and frames. Depending on what kind of work will be done and the environment it will be done in, the choice for safety eyewear is divided into the strength classes of “S” and “F”. The corresponding strength class should be determinedwith the help of a specialist, if possible.

Mechanical strength “S”
“S” is lower in strength than “F” and is generally not suitable for mechanical work.
Drop test with a steel ball: diameter 22 mm, weight 46 g, falling speed at least 5.1 m/s.

Mechanical strength “F”
“F” is stronger than “S” and is suitable for mechanical work.
Firing test with a steel ball: diameter 6 mm, weight 0.86 g, speed at least. 45 m/s.

Make computer glasses your reliable colleague!

Computers and displays of all kinds determine our daily work today. What many people are not even aware of is that our eyes are doing a really hard job! Find out how computer glasses make your work on a computer, tablet or smartphone easier.

Presbyopia: When the arms are getting too short

It usually begins at the age of 40: The accommodative capacity of the eye lens diminishes. This means that it can no longer adapt equally quickly to certain viewing distances. This usually happens slowly and covertly. We often only notice it when we have to keep the newspaper, the menu or a form with small print further and further away from us in order to be able to read it clearly - until our arms are suddenly too short.

What types of computer glasses are available?

It is crucial that computer glasses support exactly those viewing distances that you need for your work on screens and displays. These visual ranges are different for each person and are therefore measured individually by us.

Reading glasses

You might think that reading glasses are already helping. But it's not always that simple: reading glasses are designed for optimal vision in very close areas. In order to be able to recognise texts and pictures well, you will automatically lean closer to your screen. This leads to a wrong posture and therefore to tension and fatigue.

Progressive glasses

So progressive glasses might help at best. You can wear them all day long and see them close up in a relaxed and sharp way and look into the distance. This is a very good choice for almost all everyday situations. But to be able to see close up while working on the screen, you will look through the lower part of the progressive lens. You lift your head to see through the lower part of the lens. In the long run you will overstrain your neck and shoulder muscles.

Computer glasses

This is exactly why computer glasses come into play. With its viewing areas, it is optimally adapted to the eye movements while working on the screen. Your lenses open up a very large field of vision for optimum sight at close range and over medium distances - i.e. between half a meter and four meters - enabling you to see and work precisely in the required field of vision

Interesting facts

The good aspect of blue light

Light has an effect on our organism and controls our hormonal balance. The hormones melatonin and serotonin are essentially responsible for controlling our sleep-wake rhythm. The light energy we need for this is largely absorbed through our eyes. The pigment melanopsin, which is important for this, has been shown to work primarily in the short-wave range of visible light - i.e. in the range of blue light. This is why this blue light, which hits our retina, influences our psychological well-being. Corresponding light therapies are also successfully used for winter depression and sleep disorders. In addition, ultraviolet light plays a major role and is involved in the formation of vitamins. Light stimulation is therefore also of decisive importance for our metabolism. Or in a nutshell: We need blue light!

An example: Many people know the rather joking term "senile insomnia". This means that elderly people seem to have a lower need for sleep. The incidence of light into the eye plays a significant role here. Due to the lens opacity (cataract) which often occurs in old age, less blue light reaches the retina. Intraocular lenses used as cataract therapy also have a blue blocking effect and further enhance this effect. This affects the day-night rhythm of these people and changes their individual need for sleep.

The damaging aspect of blue light

Already Paracelsus knew: "All things are poisons, for there is nothing without poisonous qualities. It is only the dose which makes a thing poison". This means that the consumption of blue light in the evening, for example by watching television or using a smartphone or tablet, leads to the release of the stimulating hormone serotonin. The dose of this is then too high, which can drastically damage the biorhythm in the long run. According to various studies, too much ultraviolet and blue-violet light can also directly damage the eyes, through inflammation or a chronic injury to the eye lens. This is exactly why it is a matter of course for most people today to wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection when they are exposed to strong sunlight

Bright new world: light sources with a higher proportion of blue light

LED light (Light Emitting Diode), xenon light, energy-saving lamps or the radiation of displays: All these new light sources contain a higher blue light component than the classic old light bulb. Due to this changed spectral composition of light, we are exposed to blue light much more frequently than before. There are no reliable studies yet, whether the use of displays or frequent glances into and on these new light sources actually cause damage to the retina. And: a one-hour irradiation of the blue light on our eyes, outside and on a normal, cloudy day, is about 30 times higher than working on a display inside for an hour. But as stated above, the dose is decisive...

Clear lenses with blue filter

UV protection is not absolutely necessary for clear lenses such as those we wear inside. But there are clear lenses with blue filters, such as the UNIb-uv

Modern lighting systems and LED displays are increasingly emitting blue-violet light. These artificial blue light sources mainly occur indoors. Even though there is currently no clear evidence that visible blue light damages our retina, there is still a well-founded suspicion.

How digital devices change our vision

Tablets, smartphones and similar displays not only result in a changed light spectrum, but also a different visual behaviour. It is observed that we look more and more only into the proximity and more rarely into the distance. In addition, there is often insufficient overall brightness. This problem, also known as school myopia, can even be observed in children, when short-sightedness problems are increasingly occurring from the start of school.

digitale endgeraete

If we look too rarely into the distance, our eyes can relax less. We forget to focus quickly on different distances. This causes so-called visual stress. In addition, we blink less often when looking at displays and thus wet the cornea with less tear fluid. This can lead to dry and overstrained eyes. In the worst case, our vision deteriorates.

Our tip: Let your eyes wander more often into the distance, even while and despite working on your computer, tablet or smartphone. Allow your eyes to capture enough brightness - with appropriate protection from too much UV radiation and blue-violet light.

UNICOcomfort

UNIvaria ProClean and Eco - Ready-to-wear progressive reading glasses according to EN 166, mechanical strength "F"

Full vision from up close to far away.

Why choose UniVaria?

For most of us it starts between our 35th and 45th birthday: the ability of our eye’s lens to accommodate differing distances decreases (i.e. our ability to quickly focus at certain viewing distances). This is usually a slow and subtle process. You often first become aware of it when you have to hold the newspaper, menu or a recipe a little further away each time to read the small print clearly - until one day your arm just isn’t long enough. We call this “Presbyopia”(presbyopia).

With our ready-to-wear progressive reading glasses UNIvaria ProClean and Eco we solve the problem of our arms not being long enough and offer and offer viewing comfort in HD quality for the reading range. The progressive design specially developed for this purpose with around 27,000 calculation points provides a smooth transition from the corrected reading range to the uncorrected long range. That is how you do away with changing reading glasses and safety eyewear. With UniVaria ProClean and Eco you have safety eyewear that also helps you to read at close range.

Minimise your risk of an accident when doing everyday things.
